Part 1

Activity 1

Appropriate use of YouTube video to show complex animations - don't reinvent the wheel.

A short video showing the cardiac conduction

You will briefly recap what you have learned about the passage of electrical activity through the heart in this session.

This will make you really comfortable with cardiac conduction and the different heart regions- brilliant!

You will see there is a pause slide - up to you whether you do or don't.

Activity 2

Now you are happy with the conduction pathway and appreciate regional differences across the heart it is time for you to identify what ion channels create the activity that is seen.

CAUTION. Information on the cardiac action potential is littered with many different terms. This is because we have the gene responsible for the protein and the current generated by the protein being open. It is the flow of current that alters the membrane potential. Currents are always prefixed by the letter 'I' eg I_to -stands for the transient outward current. This gives you no clue about what the conducted ion is or how the channel is gated.

That is why you will see the protein listed eg Kv4.3 - a voltage-dependent potassium channel from the 4 family, isoform 3. - sorry it is tricky.

Then you may see KCND3 - that is the gene.

I do not want you to be confused so I have tried to keep the cross over to a minimum by listing the protein - this has more identifying information.

You will work through the ion channels that shape the membrane properties in different regions - focusing primarily on the VENTRICLE.

There is a little test of your understanding on the last few slides and I will remind you about this.

Above you got familiar with action potentials. Now you can understand how regional differences in the action potential are created. There is also an extra presentation where you can see how the autonomic nervous system affects cardiac rhythm.

This brief session guides your though regional variations in the cardiac action potentials and what causes them. You may already have an idea.
